Pull-Up Banners vs Printed Banners: Which One Does Your Business Actually Need?
The honest answer is: it depends on where you are putting it and how often you plan to use it. Both do a job. Neither is universally better. The right choice relies on your specific situation, and getting it wrong means either spending more than you need to or ordering something that doesn’t hold up.
Expresscopy is produced both from the shop on Chipstead Valley Road in Coulsdon. The team has been doing this for over 50 years, so this is practical guidance, not a sales pitch.
What Is a Pull-Up Banner?
A pull-up banner, also called a roller banner or pop-up display unit, is a freestanding display that retracts into a base unit. You pull it up, clip it to the support pole, and it stands on its own. No wall needed. No additional fixings.
They come in a range of sizes. At Expresscopy, standard roller banners are available in 800mm x 2000mm and 850mm x 2000mm sizes. Prices start from £75.00 for a standard version and £110.00 for a premium version at 800mm x 2000mm. The premium version has a heavier base with hidden legs and a tougher support mechanism, which makes a difference if you are using it regularly.
Both versions use full colour, one-sided print with eco-solvent inks on 610gsm heavy-duty blockout PVC. Each comes with a travel bag, which matters more than people expect when you are carrying it to events.

What Is a Printed Banner?
A printed banner is exactly what it sounds like: a flat, printed sheet designed to be displayed outdoors or indoors, usually by hanging, fixing to a frame, or attaching to a fence or structure. There is no stand included.
The material makes a significant difference to how a printed banner performs, and Expresscopy offers several options depending on the use.
The most popular is 440gsm PVC standard banner-grade material. It works for outdoor poster displays, large advertising banners, and general promotional use. It is the material most businesses default to, and for good reason: it is versatile and holds up in most conditions.
For building wraps or very large installations where wind is a factor, 340gsm mesh PVC is the better choice. The mesh weave allows air to pass through, which stops the banner from acting like a sail and putting stress on its fixings. That is not a concern with a small banner. It becomes a real concern when the surface area gets large.
For double-sided print where you need both faces to be clean and neither to show through, 740gsm heavy-duty blockout material is used. It is thick enough that the print on one side does not bleed through to the other.
Lightweight polyester flag material at 117gsm is also available for tent systems and indoor use, where the banner needs to be as light as possible.
When a Pull-Up Banner Is the Right Choice
Pull-up banners are the right choice when you need to move the display. Trade shows, exhibitions, networking events, pop-up stalls, conference booths. The travel bag makes transport straightforward, and the setup takes under a minute.
They are also a sensible choice for indoor use, where you cannot fix anything to a wall. A reception area, a retail floor, a waiting room. The banner stand is independent, professional-looking, and requires no installation.
The premium version is worth the extra cost if the banner is going to be used frequently. The standard version is fine for occasional use. The difference is in the durability of the base and mechanism, not the print quality, which is the same on both.
One thing worth knowing: pull-up banners are one-sided by design. If your display needs to be readable from both directions, a printed banner with blockout material provides it.
When a Printed Banner Is the Right Choice
Printed banners are the right choice when the display is going up at a fixed location and will stay there. Outdoor advertising on a fence or hoarding. A banner across a shopfront or event venue. A promotional display that stays in one place for days or weeks.
They are also the right choice when size matters more than portability. Pull-up banners have a practical upper limit on their size. Printed banners on PVC or mesh have no such limit. Any size, any design, any quantity: that is how Expresscopy approaches outdoor banner orders.
For estate agents’ boards, building site signage, or temporary promotional work, rigid display boards are another option. Correx boards (corrugated polypropylene, 4mm thick) are lightweight and cost-effective for short-term use. Foamex boards (PVC foam sheet, available in 3mm, 5mm, and 10mm thicknesses) are sturdier and appropriate for both indoor and outdoor use. Dibond (aluminium composite, 3mm) is the most durable option, wind-resistant and weatherproof, designed to last for years on a shopfront or fascia.
These are not banners in the pull-up sense, but they answer the same question: how do I display my brand professionally in a fixed location?
The Materials That Make the Difference
It is worth understanding why material choice matters before you order, because two banners of the same size printed on different materials can behave very differently in the field.
Standard PVC at 440 gsm is waterproof and colourfast. It handles most outdoor conditions without issue. If the banner is going up on a fence for a week during a summer event, this is almost certainly the right material.
Mesh at 340gsm is specifically for large formats where wind is a genuine concern. If the banner is going on scaffolding or across a large gap between structures, mesh reduces the load on fixings and prevents the material from billowing.
Blockout at 740gsm is for double-sided applications. It is heavier, and the extra thickness means it does not need hemming.
The team at Expresscopy can advise on which material suits the specific job before anything is ordered. If you are not sure, ask before you commit to a print run.
How to Order Banners from Expresscopy
If you have a deadline, say so upfront. The team is used to working to specific dates. Roller banner prices start from £75.00 for a standard 800mm x 2000mm unit, subject to VAT. Artwork is not included in the price, but the team can advise on artwork requirements before you submit a file.
Whether you need a single pull-up banner for a trade show next week or a run of outdoor PVC banners for a seasonal promotion, the process starts with a conversation. Call or email, and the team will point you in the right direction from there.
Printed gifts for special occasions are most satisfying when there is enough time to get them right. But when time is short, it is worth calling rather than assuming nothing can be done.
